Adam &fish eyed poets : Chennai (Alternative rock) In an age starting to seem fairly devoid of soul, full of a hundred million "genre-defying rock” bands all using the exact same formula, I've recently been disillusioned and finding solace in early Scott Walker records. There was something rough – unpolished and uninhibited about the early '60s, an era that a lot of bands in this country have ignored entirely. A time when bands wouldn't hesitate to put out 600 LPs, beautifully obsessive about their intricate craft. Chennai's Adam and the Fish Eyed Poets, the project of Kishore Krishna, refreshingly seems untouched by the present-day.
The first of his two new songs, 'I Will Follow', takes off from his own 'Little Monkeys' (which featured as the Indian rep on January's Music Alliance Pact), 1950s prom music, the Everly Brothers and the Beach Boys fused with all that Tom Waits-y vocal gravel. I'd go as far as saying Kishore Krishna is probably the best vocalist in Indian indie right now. His previous album Snakeism saw him dabbling in different directions, at times poppy and at times edging toward industrial music. His second new song 'Harvest' is well seated in '80s romance-pop. He's been listening to The Beat, Crystal Stilts and Desmond Dekker, and if these two songs are any indication of the upcoming album, we can expect some old-school vintage this year. |

Papon and East India Company Coming together in summer 2007 and producing a fine balance between folk and electronica – papon n the East India Company is part of an evolving Indian fusion electronica milieu. Barely six months old and they’ve created a sound symbolic of a larger kind of freedom and experimentation being experienced culturally and musically today - moving towards futuristic electronic dimensions while remaining earthed in rich tradition. At the core of this live musical experience are Papon (vocals), Brin (electronic design/sfx), Kirti (world percussions/tabla), Dipu (bass) and Krishna (guitars). With Delhi emerging as a breeding ground for a revolution in sound created in a space that builds bridges as it flows...and at a time when people are opening to explore a different sensory experience and ‘global’ is more than just a perspective and genres melt into each other – Papon n the East India Company have evolved an eclectic musical space steeped in folk tradition through electronic innovation
Papon’s is a well-known voice and presence in the fusion music scene, Dipu and Krishna both have an intrinsic rock feel and are part of hard rock bands in Assam (playing live with Papon on tours), Kirti's roots rest in ercussion and tabla (60 kilos of equipment and beats wherever he goes!), and Brin has been involved with electronic sound design and production in Delhi, Australia and Bombay for the past brings in his own unique element and the band is an opportunity for them to perform live while creating a new sound as they discover it from within - drawing together parallel streams effortlessly into one whole. A heady mix of highly diverse influences (Trilok Gurtu, Dreamtheatre, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Massive Attack, Bjork, Underworld) and musical backgrounds (Assamese folk, hard rock/metal, Indian classical, blues, funk, triphop, electro etc) add shades of musical styles to this organic musical journey.
Having done the bit around the Bollyblock and commercial music scene as well, this band is where they force known boundaries and set their creativity to flight - fuelled by a deep desire for the freedom to create an original experience. What with Independent ten years. All individually established musicians in their own right, each member record labels in India yet way off from promoting creative independence - the scope for original self-sustaining sound growing freely is restricted at best and live shows are the optimal platform for musical talent and innovation.
The Papon n the EIC's live shows reflect their flexibility and innovation as musicians through improvisational techniques, assimilating diverse sounds (like Rajasthani folk and naghadas) and a calm onstage rapport. Papon's vocals (he runs sync delays and filters through his laptop while singing) echo vivid valleys and flow like a mountain stream telling her tale to smooth basslines and soaring yet strong guitar, punctuated with diverse improvised percussive beats - all given a sublime rhythmic coherence and lush edge through Brin’s electronic rendering (Ableton live). Offering a rejuvenating concept rather than prescribed formula audio, each track is either entirely original (Fly with me, omo, jiya, Kyon hot hai pyaar), or a trademark rendering of known tunes (ranging from Bihu folk to Nusrat) - travelling beyond the traditional while immortalising it. |

DJ Chico: Dubai / Bangalore (House / Bollywood) It all began for Dj Chico a good 20 years ago when he was just a kid, messing around with some records. He knew then, as he knows now, that that was love at first sight! As a kid in the UK he had plenty of opportunities to hone his dj-ing talent, beginning at small private parties and getting bigger & better with every weekend.
In the years that followed he played with musicians and performers – big and small and fell in love with the art of making people dance. If its one thing he swears he can do it is getting anyone, or anything to move. For an entire year in the 90's he played at Swigs, the former Earthquake in Mumbai and toured with Media companies like Channel V, partying with and playing for large crowds and TV stars.
When the time came for a challenge, he was all up to it, winning the famed 'War of the Djs – 2000 & 2001'! |

LBG have been around since 1996 and started out playing the national college cultural circuit. In 1999, they decided that they had had enough of playing other peoples music, so they set out on the road less travelled to become one of the pioneers of performing original music in India.
5 Men who create and weave magic- Now after years of extensive hard work, innumerable shows, intense practice sessions, rock hard determination and suffering fools, LBG has reached a point where you just cant not notice. Having released their debut album, "This Animal is called the Wallet" in 2004, the band realized that spreading the music meant spreading the true message. |
